What's kitesurfing?

Kitesurfing is the combination of two sports; controlled steering of a kite and floating across water. The kite is 3 to 20m², attached at up to 30 meter long lines and drags the rider above water. Controlled by a bar, the kite allows to jump, or even fly 10 meter high, up to 100 meter wide without the aim of waves. Related to the fact that kitesurfing requires less wind than windsurfing, kitesurfing booms like no other water sport.

Is kitesurfing dangerous?

Compare it to driving a car! By a proper practical and theoretical education plus a responsible attitude, risk gets minimized. A complete and professional schooling is the base requirement. Only a kiteschool is able to teach you decent handling of equipment and how the evaluate miscellaneous situations.

Where did kitesurfing occur from?

Since many years, people get dragged by traction kites, whether with buggies, ski or recently across water. Reason for this delay on water, was the fact that no kite existed which was able to float. The brothers Legagnoix proved themselves as pioneers of modern kiting and as soon as surf legend Robby Naish got involved, kitesurfing was born. Nowadays, equipment developed mature and safe, suitable to inspire everyone.

Which requirements do I have to fulfill?

Besides the ability to swim, nothing else is required. Although physical and mental fitness is advantage, we will provide easy access for everyone, not that sporty.

Who long does it take to become a kiter?

Unfortunately, there's no explicit answer existing! Generally, we are targeted to provide you all basics within the first two days and mostly, some few meters on the board are managed within the first three to five days. Of course, talent, skills, motivation and certain precognition influence the progress of improvement. ...and don't forget, in a case of doubt, blame the wind, the kite or your teacher! :)

If it takes some time...don't become desperate, be patient! That's how we all did!

How to become a kitesurfer?

As first step, we recommend a basic course, to get introduced step by step. Starting to steer a trainer kite, you get used to manage the handling. Successfully accomplished, the training moves forward to stunning bodydrags, getting dragged through and / or above the water.

That's the way to learn perfect handling and how to relaunch the kite from water after small mistakes, which have to be done! Aimed by this knowledge, first steps with and on the board can be done! Our favorite basic course is the Opens internal link in current window5 days course

Where to learn kitesurfing?

Shallow water, as Lake Neusiedl offers is THE advantage for your first steps. Shallow water makes it much more safe and easy to train, than managing all the new equipment while swimming. Waves, currents and reefs are additional barriers. But most important is to learn from and with professionals, a kiteschool. Only there you will get proper KnowHow to conquer your new passion safe and fast. If you want to work on your skills on your own, after some lessons done please contact your kiteschool. Often people with same level get introduced, to go ahead together, helping each other.

Does an official license exist

Yes, it's existing. There are some associations, offering kite licenses. In Austria and Germany, licensed kiteschools provide VDWS or IKO licenses Both are internationally respected as some kind of driving license for kitesurfing. This paper is currently not mandatory but acts as evidence for proper education and is necessary to rent equipment.

What do I need to kite?

First of all: Wind plus at least one Kite including a bar and a board. As more and different sized kites you own, as more different wind conditions you can use for your time on water. Furthermore consolidated knowledge, as you achieve it at a kiteschool.

What to do when there's no wind blowing during my lessons?

Each school has it's own way to handle this issue. We, Kitesurfing.at offer a "wind guarantee": If wind is too low during your lessons, you get a voucher for those, not held practical lessons. This voucher is not limited in time and we will discuss the next possibility for your lesson concerning wind and your spare time.

How much is a complete kitesurfing equipment?

Logically there's no limit, like everywhere else. A decent starter set comes for around € 1.300.-, maybe cheaper although cheap used material could be too old, too used and unsafe! Always keep in mind: Buying cheap is mostly buying twice and regarding kitesurfing it also could be very dangerous! Don't hesitate to ask your kiteschool if questions occur and look out for advice.
