FAQ – Kite Camp Sicily

A rental car is essential in Sicily. Typically , 3–4 people share one vehicle. For maximum flexibility, you can also book a car on your own; prices are usually very low. You’ll receive a link to our recommended platform, or you can book directly through the tour operator Retter – Sports. For carpooling, we always match up 3–4 people and let you know as soon as a carpool group has been formed. One person from this group must then take responsibility for booking a rental car (either through the online platform or with Retter–Sports). Volunteers are always selected for this task. We definitely recommend registering an additional driver. The cost of the rental car is then split fairly on-site. Since most people arrive and depart at the same time and stay together in the same apartment complex, this system works quite well. However, if you’re still worried about not being able to drive to the spot or back to the apartment whenever you want, we can assure you that there are always people who want to head home earlier, or go to the spot later, or someone from the teaching team will give you a ride—since, as mentioned earlier, we’re all neighbors at the accommodation.

According to statistics, April is the month with the highest average wind speed. There is a nearly 60% chance of winds exceeding 22 knots. The average daytime temperature is 18°C in the shade. The highest recorded temperature in April is 22°C, and the average nighttime temperature is 13°C. In October, it is still quite a bit warmer. Here, we have average temperatures of 22°C during the day and 19°C at night. The average high is27°C . The average wind speed is 14–15 knots. We recommend a 4 mm wetsuit for both months. However, once you’ve booked, we’ll send you more detailed packing list tips. 

There are two airports to choose from: Vienna to Palermo (PMO) or Bratislava to Trapani (TPS). There are currently no flights from Vienna to Trapani. The drive from Palermo to your accommodation takes about 50 minutes. From Trapani, on the other hand, it takes only 7 minutes. However, car rental rates in Trapani are often slightly higher. We recommend choosing a flight based on the prices of the flights or rental cars. You could also travel from Bratislava to Trapani and return home from Palermo to Vienna. However, this requires the necessary flexibility from the rental car companies and airlines. This absolutely stunning lagoon is an extremely healthy ecosystem teeming with tiny creatures. Countless hermit crabs, Venus clams, mussels, tiny fish, other types of crustaceans, and much more. None of these animals are dangerous. However, contact with sea nettles or sea anemones on the seagrass can be somewhat unpleasant on bare skin. The pain is similar to that of stinging nettles, and the skin’s reaction is also comparable. The only difference is that the consequences are completely different. For some people, the small white spots disappear within 20 minutes after contact; in very rare cases, however, they can become inflamed. We definitely don’t take any risks and always kitesurf in so-called full suits (long sleeves, long legs), even in warm temperatures. For beginners who are likely to be walking through the lagoon a lot, neoprene shoes or socksare recommended anyway. 

Torre Lupa is a self-catering apartment complex. Therefore, half-board or other meal plans are not available. For breakfast, there’s a nice café just around the corner (about a 5-minute walk) that serves pistachio croissants, filled paninis, and incredibly good coffee. Of course, you also have the option to pick up some groceries at the local store (right across from the café) and make your own breakfast. Every apartment has a fully equipped kitchen. For meals during the day, we usually stop on our way to the beach at the island’sbest snack bars. At the spot, you’ll find the Kitelagune—run with Viennese charm—which always sells cold drinks and coffee. For dinner, we usually head to our favorite pizzeria, about a 7-minute walk from the accommodation. Fast, incredibly delicious, and really affordable! Of course, we’ve also planned a few culinary highlights for you. But rest assured: you won’t go hungry in Sicily! 

Sicilian country cuisine is our personal highlight. Whether it’s the pizzeria around the corner or the “Tutti per Tutto” (a special 2-hour dinner), the dishes from the Trapani and Marsala regions are simply unforgettable. Adjacent to the lagoon at the kitesurfing spot are what are known as seawater salt flats. On a walk along the lagoon walltoward the sunset, there’s a good chance you’ll spot flamingos. Erice is an 800-meter-high mountain with an ancient old town right on the coast (visible from the spot). A breathtaking view and the island’s finest pastry chefs, combined with the country’s best Negronis, make this excursion a culinary journey that broadens your horizons. Natural hot springs are located about a 40-minute drive from the kitesurfing spot. There’s nothing more relaxing than soaking your tired bones in a 40°C pool after a strenuous day of kitesurfing, accompanied by a cold beer or glass of wine and an Italian platter of snacks. A motorboat harbor is located about 7 minutes from the spot. In principle, anyone in Italy with a valid driver’s license can rent a 40PS motorboat. A trip to Favignana, the “Tuna Island,” offers breathtaking coves and a charming little old town.
